Space Debris is a New York based “multi purpose art space” in Karaköy, Istanbul. Its aim is to create a hub space for creative interaction and innovative dialogue within a collective soul. Space Debris is a multi-faceted space; functioning as both exhibition and event space, as well as artist labs and workshops, seminars and an operating darkroom for analog lovers to use. Its goal is to achieve recognition for innovative interactive new media works and performances with sound and visuals, as well as mixed media works in 2-D & 3D with an interest in interdisciplinary subjects that pushes the traditional boundaries.

The story of Space Debris is driven from the “Kessler Syndrome” theory. “Space Debris” also known as orbital debris, is the collection of defunct objects in orbit around Earth, including everything from spent rocket stages, old satellites, fragments from disintegration, erosion, collision.. stardust. Kessler syndrome debates that this debris may create a new orbit in the chance of collision influenced by each other, functioning like a runaway chain reaction that will pulverize everything in orbit including functioning satellites. This new form of interactive creation is the analogy for construction of the art space in Karaköy, Istanbul.

Each visitor to come to Space Debris is envisioned as stardust and are to be inspired in creating new orbit; a new form of thinking, a new creative dialogue, a new art wave… from the experiences created for them with the happenings here. And the runaway chain reaction will occur once the debris created around (both the emotional debris created by state of unstable social constructs and untrustworthy economy and also the constant physical debris created by the constantly changing facade of the undeniable construction as result of gentrification), cultivates into a positive energy with the creative interaction.

Space Debris is a place for all artists and art lovers to experience within constructs of fluxus happenings. It is not only interested in showing a pretty picture on a wall but to create an all-encompassing experience visually and aurally: to create an ambience that the viewer can enter in and interact with.

New York menşeli çok amaçlı sanat mekanı

Space Debris, sanatçı ve sanata meraklı herkesin gelip deneyimleyebileceği fluxus/happenings çerçevesi içinde çok yönlü bir sanat mekanı.

Space Debris’in hikayesi  ‘Kessler Syndrome’ denilen bir teoriden esinlenerek doğdu. Kessler sendromunda ‘uzay enkazı’ olarak adlandırdığımız, dünyanın etrafında birikmiş başı boş yıldız tozlarının, yörüngeden çıkmış uydu ve gezegen parçalarının birbirlerine rastladığında bir etkileşim haline geçme anında yeni bir yörünge yaratabilme olasılığından bahseder. Space Debris’e gelecek olan bireylerin her biri bir yıldız tozu gibi düşünülüp burda gördükleri ve deneyimledikleri sanat olaylarından yeni bir yörünge, yeni bir akim oluşturmaları hayal edildi. Özellikle toplumun içinde bulunulduğu ekonomik belirsizlik ve sosyal-siyasi kargaşanın yarattığı duygusal enkaz, ve Karaköy’ün hızla değişen çehresinden dolayı süregelen enkaz halinin pozitif bir yapılandırmaya dönüştürülmesi; sanatsal bir bakış açısıyla oluşturulması umut edildi.

Karaköy’de yeni bir çehre oluşturan Space Debris, bir sanat galerisinden çok daha fazlasını sunuyor. Aynı anda hem fotoğraf stüdyosu, hem performans ve sergi alanı, hem de ‘workshop’ mekanı olarak hizmet veren Debris, Perşembe-Pazar 12:00-19:00 arası, diğer günler randevuyla sanatseverlere açık. Siyah beyaz fotoğraf tutkunları için Space Debris’de kurulan karanlık oda, analog baskı yapmak isteyenler ideal bir alternatif.
